To forage forward is a Pennsylvania German tradition of eating Pork & Sauerkraut on the first day of the new year for good luck. Many families will have this dish for dinner and many local establishments hold special events featuring only this dish. Why? Because pigs look forward when they root for food vs. chickens or turkeys that scratch backward while the sauerkraut represents many riches with its shreds of cabbage.
